St George River from Warren to Thomaston

St. George River from Warren to Thomaston Professional Review and Guide

"The St. George River winds its ways through the farmlands and woods of the towns of Searsmont, Appleton, and Union before becoming a tidal river in the town of Warren. From Warren to Thomaston the river is an easy half-day trip with the tide. You may choose to spot a vehicle at either end for a one-way run, or paddle back to your put-in with the return tide. The river is quiet and pastoral, with tall grass and woodlands along the shore and an occasional farmhouse. This is a relaxing paddle unless you’re bucking a strong southwesterly, which is not an uncommon scenario on a summer afternoon.

The tidal current is quite gentle but picks up some strength after crossing under the Route 1 bridge and continues along the bend behind the Maine State Prison. However, the current is always manageable, though things can get choppy when opposed by the wind. You can park your kayak in the mud along the shore for an impromptu picnic or rest stop, and at either end of this trip there are picnic and rest room facilities. This makes a great float trip at a relaxing pace and a nice alternative for a foggy-day paddle. It is also suitable for canoes and recreational kayaks."
