Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve

Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve Professional Review and Guide

"This out-and-back trip from Round Pond is a wonderful full-day paddle with a lunch stop at a very special place: the Rachel Carson Salt Pond Preserve. You can paddle right up to the quarter-acre tidal pool where Rachel Carson gathered much of the material for her book The Edge of the Sea. This site is managed by The Nature Conservancy and is open to the public year-round.

It honors the work of Carson, who was also instrumental in starting the Maine chapter of The Nature Conservancy. The preserve covers a total of seventy-eight acres, most of it across Route 32 from the salt pond. You are welcome to hike the trails through woodlands and overgrown hay fields from the original Danforth farm, now the site of the Gosnold Arms Inn. The trailhead is directly across the road and marked by yellow blazes."
