Deer Isle Archipelago

Deer Isle Archipelago Professional Review and Guide

"An island-to-island tour of Maine’s premiere kayaking destination. Boat traffic and fog are the principal safety issues to consider when paddling here.

The Deer Island Thorofare is utilized by a variety of vessels including the Stonington fishing fleet, and is especially congested in summer. Merchant Row is the principal passage for larger vessels as well as ferries, schooners, sailboats, and other craft. Fog is frequent here and can develop quickly, severely limiting visibility."

Great trip - the area is sheltered by so many islands that wind and waves were not a problem the day we did it. Great weather. Only problem was the channel crossings - we had to look out for fast moving lobster boats before we started the crossings. Stop on Green Island and swim in the Quarry. Very refreshing and much warmer than the ocean
