South Face Trail

South Face Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Taking you over a gorge and cascades on wooden bridges, and up and around the south face of wooded Bernard Mountain, this trail is a rugged one. Heading in a westerly direction first, the trail soon takes you over the first wooden bridge spanning a gorge and its rushing stream. Highlights: Rugged climb up south face of wooded, 1,071-foot Bernard Mountain."

This is a steep forested climb that probably would have been rated higher by my wife and I if the small viewpoint atop of Bernhard had not been clouded in - the risk of any hazy day in Acadia. The hike is suprisingly steep nearly all the way - and has a small section of old growth near the top. We went down the sluiceway for a loop.
