Eagle Island

Eagle Island Professional Review and Guide

"A short paddle to a beautiful island and the former summer home of Arctic explorer Admiral Robert Peary. Long before setting his sights on the North Pole, famed explorer Robert E. Peary became captivated with a little island in Eastern Casco Bay.

He first explored and fell in love with Eagle Island while on a camping trip during his high school years in Portland. After graduating from Bowdoin College in 1881, he purchased the island, reportedly for $500. This trip takes you from the southern tip of Harpswell Neck out to the island where you can explore for yourself its natural beauty and tour Peary’s spectacular summer home."

Well first off, we couldn't have asked for a better day, beautiful, warm and sunny. Dolphin Marina was very accommodating and was a good launch site for us and they let us change in the restaurant bathrooms, a nice plus. There was a lot of activity on the water around the islands with the water warm and calm. The paddle was easy with some choppy waves around the southern tips of the islands. I haven't sea kayaked for some years now with my partner being new to it we stayed close to land however, if we were not alone we would have ventured out to some other islands. A nice trip and would recommend it for beginner to get their feet wet.
