River Run Professional Review and Guide

"A forest of venerable white pines and hemlocks in an inland preserve on Salmon Falls River. If you’ve had enough of vacation beach sitting, this walk is shaded and cool—a good outing on hot, summery days. You’ll be walking along a wide pathway through a mature forest stand of Eastern white pine and hemlock.

The magnificent Eastern white pines are the largest conifers (cone-bearing trees) in the Northeast and favor moist, porous soil. Virgin stands like this provided the British with 100-foot masts for their sailing fleets. Special Features: majestic 90- to 100-foot Eastern white pines and old, hemlocks, historical Hamilton House, and benches overlooking Salmon Falls River."

Easy walk on a winding trail over gentle rolling hills. Some okay views of the river and surrounding forest. The trail is hard-pack and eroded with exposed roots so pushing a pram is right out. The bridal path is in much better shape. If you have small children there is a tripping hazard on tree roots and some steep drop-off along the trail. The trail system is well marked but you should download and print your own map as there might not be any at the kiosk. There is an iron ranger collection box at the gate and the fee is $3 for resident and $4 for nonresident. It's a peaceful walk or just a nice place to sit and enjoy nature at one of the many benches along the trail.
