8-16 nautical miles
Distance
10.56-foot mean tidal range in Bar Harbor. Current floods to the north, ebbs south. Stave Island Bar and parts of Flanders Bay flat-out at low tide.
Tidal Information
Despite being somewhat sheltered from the open ocean by the mid-bay islands, the Sorrento-Dram-Preble area has enough fetch to the south to develop some big seas, and if the current goes against the wind, waves will steepen. An offshore wind (from the north) can be deceptively dangerous here. The Stave Island Bar develops mudflats at lower tides, and the Jordan Island Bar develops a strong current mid-tide. Watch for opposing wind and waves. Also expect strong currents between Jordan and Ironbound islands. Even on the calmest days, Ironbound Island is no place for the unprepared. Expect rough conditions and no bailouts. Paddlers here should have solid boat-handling and rescue skills.
