One unique feature of Acadia National Park is its many vertical trails requiring hikers to ascend steel rungs affixed to solid granite rock faces. Although not an ideal choice for explorers wary of heights, for others seeking excitement on Mount Desert Island, opting for one of the park’s fistclenching ascents is a must. This popular climb up the aptly named Beehive is a short but sweet choice. Combine it with a stroll across nearby Sand Beach and the rocky promontory of Great Head for a wonderful half-day adventure on one of Maine’s most frequently visited shorelines.
