Penobscot and Sargent Mountains Trail

Penobscot and Sargent Mountains Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A strenuous hike to two of Acadia’s highest peaks, with long periods of hiking on open ledges with spectacular views. The cliffs of Penobscot Mountain rise steeply from the western shore of Jordan Pond and provide habitat for one of Acadia’s nesting pairs of peregrine falcons.

This hike provides an alternative to the Jordan Cliffs Trail, which is often closed due to the nesting falcons. Sargent Mountain is the second highest peak on Mount Desert Island, and its flat, wide-open sub-alpine summit provides some of the island’s best views of Somes Sound, the Cranberry Islands, and western mountains."

Beautiful views of Jordan Pond and the ocean. One of my favorite hikes at Acadia.
Great trail / **** / I would give it five starts but I hiked it [five summits: Pemetic, Penobscot, Sargent, North & South Bubble] in a rain storm with near zero visibility. The hiking between the two summits is very reminiscent of hiking above 10000' in the western states. The Penobscot Mountain Trail is now [August 2008] called Spring Trail, the original name. If you happen to hike these exposed summits in the rain, going up is safe and easy; beware of coming down. It is quite easy to slip with potentially very serious consequences. I need to go back and do these trails on a nice, clear fall day.
