Green Mountain Railroad

Green Mountain Railroad Professional Review and Guide

"A hike along the route of the old cog railroad that once climbed Green (now Cadillac) Mountain. The Green Mountain Cog Railroad was only the second of its kind in the country. (The Mount Washington Cog Railroad in New Hampshire was the first.) Tourists first ascended the mountain by railroad in 1883. Business boomed thereafter: The railroad made four trips a day during the first year of operation.

However, competition with the existing carriage road led to the railroad's decline. In 1895, the Green Mountain engines were sold to the Mount Washington Cog Railroad. General location: Just south of the Park Loop Road-Cadillac Mountain Summit Road junction, Acadia National Park, Mount Desert Island."
