Around The Mountain Loop Trail

Around The Mountain Loop Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This ride has it all: three waterfalls, mountain and ocean views, and seven major bridge crossings. It is not clear which mountain the person who named this loop had in mind, for it actually loops around six: Penobscot Mountain, Cedar Swamp Mountain, Bald Peak, Parkman Mountain, Gilmore Peak, and Sargent Mountain. It begins and ends next to the deep blue waters of picturesque Jordan Pond.

For 12.0 miles, it rises and falls through almost every forest type in the park, passes steep cliffs and waterfalls, and climbs to dramatic views of the areas surrounding Acadia National Park. It is long by carriage-road standards and gains more elevation (1,000 feet) than any other loop in the park. Nevertheless, strong riders can still complete it in less than half a day. However, it is easy to spend the entire day studying details of nature and soaking in the long distance views."

"The twin rounded peaks of South and North Bubbles rim the long and lovely Jordan Pond. From a vantage point high up the side of a mountain, gaze out to unobstructed views of Somes Sound. Cross seven stone bridges. This is the Around Mountain Loop. The 11.0-mile circuit is the longest loop in the carriage road system and offers skiers exciting vistas along with a workout. On this circuit, skiers get a chance to see the impact that the wind and sun have on the carriage roads.

Be prepared for windswept snows as the carriage road ascends the mountains. There is more than one mountain on this Around Mountain Loop. The most prominent peaks are the 1,323-foot Sargent, 1,194-foot Penobscot, and 941-foot Parkman. Surface quality: Skier tracked though portions are groomed by volunteers at times."

"This long ride goes through gorgeous forests and past scenic ponds."
