Rockport to Camden

Rockport to Camden Professional Review and Guide

"Rockport and Camden offer what most chambers of commerce only dream about: picturesque villages arrayed around harbors that look out to islands and the blue expanse of open bay. Throw in a fascinating variety of sailing vessels, from newly minted yachts to proudly maintained windjammers, and the picture is enough to send a boat lover into ecstasy. The epicenter of midcoast Maine lies somewhere between these two towns, which are only a short distance apart as you cruise Route 1 (or sit in the traffic on a summer Friday). Having a kayak will allow you to see this shoreline from a unique vantage point beyond the reach of myriad ice cream stands and T-shirt vendors.

Paddling along the shore between Rockport and Camden will also give you a close-up view of how new and old money is spent in America. There are stunning estates of weathered clapboard and wooded enclaves, as well as newer retreats with freshly planted landscaping. Leaving Rockport Harbor, you can paddle around Indian Island or pass between the island and Beauchamp Point for more wind protection. The lighthouse on Indian Island is no longer operable, and the island is privately owned and inaccessible to the public."
