Rattlesnake Mountain

Rattlesnake Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Rattlesnake Mountain is a granite ridge north of Sebago Lake amid a jumble of smaller lakes and ponds. The hike climbs along the mountain’s southern flank, with views from two open ledges.

The trail crosses the oak-covered summit ridge to a series of descending ledges with fine views of the Sebago region. Especially when the trees are leafless, you have views of the White Mountains as well."

Had a hard time trying to find the second summit and accidentally went back down the mountain because the trail was covered by a fallen tree. Overall nice hike and great view. Steep at some times.

This is a nice hike that I found easy but it does get a bit steep in some spots toward the end. There's a view of Panther Lake from the trail that's very pretty. Oddly after you reach the second of two outlooks, if you keep going there's not a lot to see. But the views of the wildflowers and the lake is picture perfect.

If you're looking for a hike within an hour's drive of Portland with good views, shopping and eating opportunities along the way and is kid/dog/family friendly then you should consider Rattlesnake Mountain.

It's about 45 minutes from Portland. You would take a right onto Route 85 by the Good Life Market (great place to pick up sandwiches for the hike) just off 302. You'll drive another 10-15 down Route 85 and parking will be on the left-hand side.

Take the Bri-Mar trail to the false summit for fantastic views. The real summit is in the middle of the woods where it looks to have had a building at one point. I imagine a beautiful country house sitting on the top with views all around when it was cleared.

If you keep driving down Route 85 and take a left onto Route 11 there is an excellent Maple Syrup establishment "Sweet Williams" - wicked nice people & fantastic syrup.

Best,
