Rapid River

Rapid River Professional Review and Guide

"Probably the best wild, big brook trout river in the United States. Requires at least a mile’s walk or hour’s boat trip to reach fishable water. This may be the shortest and best brook trout river in the world. While only 3.2 miles long, the Rapid River consistently produces brook trout of five pounds or so. Why? Nobody knows.

Some suspect the reason may have something to do with the genetic pool from which these lunkers come. Another factor may be an abundance of smelt fed into the river from Richardson Lake. And eliminating ice fishing at the Big Hole, where the Rapid discharges into Lake Umbagog on Maine’s border with New Hampshire, may also have had an impact. If you want to wrestle square-tails of near-Labrador size on fly fishing tackle in the lower 48, here’s the place to do it.

Species: Brook, some landlocked salmon"
