Portland Trails

Portland Trails Professional Review and Guide

"The Back Cove Trail represents a pleasant diversion for a visitor to the city. The route takes you completely around a sheltered inlet. Shorebirds abound here, offering a unique chance to watch and photograph wildlife in an urban setting.

The trail winds completely around Back Cove. Depending on the height of the tide, the cove may be full of water or the mudflats may be exposed. Only that section of the cove near the entrance to Casco Bay is deep water. Back Cove Trail is actually one small part of a larger vision. Portland Trails, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to creating a 30-mile network of recreational trails within Greater Portland."

Very popular and well maintained urban trail for walkers and bikers at all times of year. Good views of downtown Portland. Best at high tide. The Cove can completely drain during low tides, and "smell" (although I like the smell).
