Jewell Island

Jewell Island Professional Review and Guide

"This is a destination paddle to the shores of Jewell Island, a popular public island about 8 miles out from Portland launch sites. There is lots to explore on this impressive island with its observation towers, old gun emplacements, and hiking trails. Jewell Island has served as a fortified site guarding the approaches to and from Casco Bay over several centuries. Exploring Jewell Island is a far cry from a wilderness experience.

A typical summer day’s visit may mean landing among rafts of powerboaters lugging large coolers and grills ashore for a weekend party, and the anchorages along the northwest shore are usually crowded with small sailboats and yachts. But a visit in the off-season or during midweek can be quite nice, and there is plenty of room to spread out and roam. Jewell Island is also open for overnight visits (camping during a summer weekend can be a complete madhouse) and has several campsites, fire pits, and pit toilets."
