Gorham Mountain Trail

Gorham Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Easy accessibility, quick climb, no backtracking, and mountains-to-sea views . . . what more could you ask for? This hike up 525-foot Gorham Mountain is the perfect half-day jaunt. It’s not rail-trail flat, but the elevation gain is gradual and the rewards far outweigh the effort. Combine this hike with a walk along Sand Beach, then return to Bar Harbor for a cup of steaming chowder, and you have the makings for a fine winter day."

If you don't have a car in Bar Harbor, you can take the free Island Hopper bus from the Village Green in town, (It's the Eden bus), down the loop road. Tell the bus driver you want to get off at the Gorham Mountain Trail head, which is after the Sand Beach stop. The trail head is 1/2 way down the parking lot on the right. It's fairly easy to follow and is what I'd call a light to medium difficulty. There's no serious climbing, and fairly gentle grades. (Though there are a few spots that get steep for a few moment.) The views from the trail's high points go both west towards the mountains and east towards the sea. The whole thing, (even with a side trip to the lake and back), is do-able in under a couple of hours if you're moving quickly and not more than three unless you actually take a nap or something. It's a great trail if you want to hit a trail in the AM and go do other things or get in a quick mid-PM hike before losing the sun. Enjoy! Scott
