Great Pond Mountain

Great Pond Mountain Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Great Pond Mountain is one of the easiest granite peaks to climb in Maine. The trail climbs very gently up exposed bedrock with many views to the south. Near the summit the trail crosses a huge expanse of granite.

From here you have fine views from east to west, including Mount Desert Island, Blue Hill and Penobscot Bays, and the Camden Hills. The actual summit is in the woods behind this open area; a short trail loops through the woods to the semi-open summit."

This is a very nice hike, though we did go up the steeper way. The trail is somewhat steep in 3-4 places, and was very wet in June. I have also been up in the winter and we had to contend with some very slick icy sections where frozen water covered granite ledges. The views are panoramic to the South and a bit occluded to the East and West. The surrounding wilderness areas to the East and West also have some public trails up smaller nearby hills, but I have not yet been on any of them. Wear bug spray in the warm months to ward off biting blackflies and mosquitos. See for a local trail map and visiting guidelines.
