Pemetic Mountain Trail

Pemetic Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is the longest way up Pemetic, first meandering over the partly wooded 698-foot Triad summit before bringing you up steep cliffs and along the ridge to the fourth-highest peak in Acadia. This hike has one of the more out-of-the-way trailheads, making it a route less traveled.

From the trailhead at the carriage road, climb gradually 0.4 mile to the summit of the Triad, with its limited views south to most of the Cranberry Isles and better views north to Pemetic Mountain. Smack in the middle of Pemetic and Day Mountains, the Triad can be a peaceful perch, even on a summer weekend, as we discovered on a recent trip. A plaque set in a rock just below the peak carries the name of one of the old
memorial paths that used to crisscross this area, the Van Santvoord Trail."

We climbed a lot of mountains, and this was by far one of t he most beautiful and varied. The trail takes you through mountainside, along a pond, down into the woods, by a running brook. It's just perfect.

We find this one of the best hikes in the entire park. It is tiring, sometimes difficult and pure rock climbing fun. It is the type of hike that brings us to Acadia. This is marked as moderate in most guide, however the terrain is nearly vertical in many places. Do not let that dissuade you. If you take your time it is great hike for kids and adults. My children (one five and one ten) both love it. That said, great care needs to be taken as an "excited" child could easily fall forty or more feet. I would also avoid it when wet as many places would be very slippery even with good gear (sneakers are not good gear). As you approach the top, you get a 360 degree view of the area with about the best single view in the park. When you are done, you can work your way down to Jordan Pond and enjoy some blueberry pie or crumb for a much deserved reward. One note, if you take the trail that ends at the road by bubble rock, it is a steep boulder strewn path, rough on the ankles and knees. Plan extra time there. If you move at a moderate pace, and include the Jordan pond loop, plan on 4 hours round trip (including a few stops along the way). Watch the weather as it changes quickly because of the warmth of the mountain and the cold sea. Fog moving in (and out) in a minutes is natural.
