Mount Desert Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"Nestled near the apex of Somes Sound on Mount Desert Island, Mount Desert Campground provides a tent-camping experience that’s as close to perfect as any campground in this book offers. The entire campground is artfully carved out of the rolling woods that reach all the way down to the shoreline. The campground is also conveniently situated near the main entrance to Acadia National Park and right near the Eagle Lake and Witch Hole Pond loops.
Mount Desert doesn’t have any areas set aside specifically for tent camping, but there really isn’t a bad site in the place. The A-, B-, and C-area sites are the best, especially the contiguous sites on the A peninsula, A12 through A14+ (which accounts for four sites since site A14+ was added). To get to these, you have to walk about 50 feet along the peninsula. If those sites are taken, as is often the case, another piece of prime camping real estate is site A5, on a small bluff overlooking the water."
