Monhegan Island

Monhegan Island Professional Review and Guide

"Explore the rugged cliffs and spruce forests of the extensive trail system on this remote island 10 miles off the Maine coast. Monhegan Island, roughly 1.75 miles long and 0.75 miles across, is heavily forested with spruce and fir trees, except along its rugged ocean margins, which are dominated by cliffs of dark-colored gabbro, an igneous rock of volcanic origin. On the west, Manana and Smutty Nose islands hem in the island’s snug harbor and wharf. The rocky hump of Nigh Duck guards the initial entrance.

Nine miles of trails crisscross the island, creating extensive opportunities for exploration, limited only by your available time and energy. This hike utilizes a portion of four different trails and several village byways to reach into the dense interior forests and the dramatic rocky headlands along the eastern edge of the island. Monhegan trails are numbered 1 through 18 and marked by small green blocks of wood with painted white numbers."
