    The North Basin

    The North Basin Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"From Blueberry Knoll at the mouth of the North Basin, you have spectacular views of North Basin, Great Basin, and the country to the east. Hamlin Ridge and the Howe Peaks rise nearly vertically from North Basin. This uncrowded corner of Katahdin isn’t to be missed. The hike also crosses from North Basin into Great Basin for a visit to Chimney Pond.

On most days, Katahdin’s Great Basin is a buzz of activity: hikers high on the mountain shouting joyfully at their completion of the AT or just making it to Baxter Peak, campers wandering around Chimney Pond campground, and the sounds of cooking drift out from the spruce woods. Less than a mile away, the North Basin sits quiet, empty but for boulders. The view from Blueberry Knoll in North Basin is spectacular. There are towering cliffs, huge broken boulders, and mountains all around. The scale of it is almost beyond comprehension."
