Little Abol Falls Trail

Little Abol Falls Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Although Baxter State Park is probably best known as home to Mount Katahdin—Maine’s highest mountain and the northernmost stop on the Appalachian Trail—it also offers over 200 miles of hiking trails, bound to suit everyone’s hiking interests and abilities. A trip to Baxter State Park requires some planning and travel time, but it is definitely worth the effort. Per the insightful stipulations and vision of former Governor Percival Baxter, who gifted the park to the State of Maine, most of Baxter State Park has been maintained as a wildlife sanctuary and kept in its natural state as much as possible. Because of this, hikers will be treated to pristine surroundings in which wildlife abounds. Waterfalls, mountain peaks, streams, meadows, and ponds are all there to enjoy.

This is a terriic hike for younger children or those looking for reward without a huge amount of effort. Although the trail is uphill on the way to the waterfall, the ascent is fairly gradual. You will reach the falls in less than a mile, and the trip back will be virtually all downhill. You may never even hear the questions “Are we there yet?” and “How much farther?” (Or at least you won’t hear them for long.) Near the falls is a perfect spot to sit and have a snack before heading back down the trail. Register for your hike at the ranger station at Abol Campground."
