Foss and Knowlton Pond

Foss & Knowlton Pond Professional Review and Guide

"Foss & Knowlton Pond is one of the prettier ponds in this corner of Baxter. You hike through a mossy forest to Lost Pond, then a dry, scrubby forest to Foss & Knowlton Pond. The view of Katahdin across the pond is worth the hike. There are lots of blueberries along the hike’s second half. Both ponds have rental canoes.

The hike follows Foss & Knowlton Pond Trail east around Lost Pond. After passing the pond, the hike crosses dry, scrubby country. The ground is sandy with blueberries along the trail. The cool, mossy forest seems a distant memory. Where the trail begins to descend to Foss & Knowlton Pond, a side trail leads to the north shore of the pond where the rental canoe is. The Foss & Knowlton Trail descends a rocky slope to the marshy shore of the pond. Large boulders sit in the water among yellow water lilies. Dragonflies clatter through the air in pursuit of prey. A bench sits beside the trail where you have a fine view of Katahdin."
