Shoreline Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A wonderful walk along a rocky shoreline past a cattail marsh, black sand beaches, and a view of the Isles of Shoals 9 miles away on the horizon. Situated at Kittery Point at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor, Fort Foster on Gerrish Island was built in 1872 to protect Portsmouth and its strategic location at the mouth of the Piscataqua River between New Hampshire and Maine.

When World War II began, Fort Foster was expanded to guard the harbor where the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard built warships and submarines. The town of Kittery now owns the fort; its grounds are a public recreational park. Special Features: spectacular river and ocean views, multiple swamp, woodland, and shore habitats, and tidal pools."
