Southwest Coastal Challenge

Southwest Coastal Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"This is one of the rides recommended by the Maine Department of Transportation, with a few modifications. Scenery is fantastic, and it’s easy, flat pedaling. That won’t be the case in July or August. Plan this one for spring or fall. A bike is the best (some would say the only) way to see the Maine coast. It’s an especially good way to visit this area — the southwest coast — where sandy beaches extend for miles and the coastal plain reaches far inland.

The southwest coast was the earliest settled and is the most densely populated section of Maine coastline. Except for public beaches and areas of public land designated as the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, the area is heavily developed. Parking a car to get to a beach can be almost impossible in the summer, and may be tricky other times of year. But on a bike, it’s easy."
