Crowley Island

Crowley Island Professional Review and Guide

"Crowley Island is a large inhabited island just west of Jonesport. Bounded on the west by the West River and on the east by the Indian River, it can offer hours of protected paddling and even a circumnavigation if the tide is just right. There are many options for making this trip work with tides in your favor, though, since you have the option of proceeding up either side of the island. There is a nice little rest stop on Indian River Island (not marked on the chart), which sits at the mouth of the cove leading into the village of Indian River.

This tiny, wooded island is accessible only at half tide or better; keep an eye on your watch and the water so you don’t get stranded on an ebbing tide. While circum-navigating Crowley Island requires some planning and a keen eye on your watch, it is well worth the effort. The trip is relaxing (except for keeping time) and generally quite placid. It is particularly beautiful in the fall, because a good mix of hardwoods and conifers lines the shores."
