Little Moose Mountain

Little Moose Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"The rocky outcropping on Little Moose Mountain’s long ridge offers fine views across the Little and Big Moose Ponds of Big Moose Mountain. To the east is Moosehead Lake and the mountains across it. To get to these views, you hike past the two ponds, through woods filled with spring wildflowers. Little Moose Mountain is a long, low ridge that runs south-west from Greenville Junction to the Notch Ponds. The highest point on the ridge is near its eastern end, but the wooded summit has no trail to it.

The center of the ridge has several rocky outcroppings overlooking Little and Big Moose Ponds with views of Moosehead Lake and the surrounding mountains. It is these outcroppings that the hike traverses. The hike begins by descending a low ridge through a hardwood forest dominated by maple and beech. In late spring the forest floor is awash with wildflowers. The hobblebush and wake robin, or blood trillium, bloom first, in
early May after the ground has warmed."
