Jones Pond

Jones Pond Professional Review and Guide

"Just a few miles, as the gull flies, from heavily visited Mount Desert Island, Jones Pond is much less well known, at least to tourists. The town of Gouldsboro maintains a recreation area on the pond that is heavily used by local residents. On a nice summer weekend, you can expect to see a lot of people. In addition, scattered houses intrude on the shoreline all around the pond. Though paddling here will not be a wilderness experience, enjoying the water and wildlife in the early morning or before or after the main summer season can prove quite rewarding.

The pair of nesting loons we saw here suggests that it never gets too crowded, because repeated human disturbance drives loons away. Several attractive islands add scenic character to Jones Pond, and beautiful mosses and lichens festoon the huge granite boulders on the far shore. The pond is surrounded by a mature mixed canopy with a well-developed understory. While there is good diversity in the understory, sweet gale dominates the shoreline. Where it is plentiful pinch off a few leaves and enjoy the pungent aroma. Prominent fish species: smallmouth bass, chain pickerel, and supposedly a few lunker brown trout."
