Barters Island and the Lower Sheepscot River

Barters Island and the Lower Sheepscot River Professional Review and Guide

"The Sheepscot River and its backwaters are picturesque and offer hours of exploring, though there are few public access points for a leg stretch or pit stop. You’ll need to avoid the strong tidal runs both into and out of Knubble Bay on the western side of the river, but the river current itself is manageable for sea kayakers.

Both the Cross River and the Back River on the eastern side are well protected and offer numerous quiet spots for leisurely paddling. You will want to be careful when paddling through the area marked Oven Mouth on the Cross River. While it isn’t quite as intimidating as its name implies, it is a fast run of water and should be avoided during the middle of the tide."
