Black Mountain

Black Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"A steep climb to the summit of a mountain on public reserve land with good views of surrounding lakes and mountains. Black Mountain is surrounded by lakes and ponds and is near several other mountain trails.

A hiker could spend several days in this area, walking over varied terrain. Cairns and stone steps mark this trail. Atop the mountain, cairn builders have waxed poetic. Monoliths set among miniature spruces remind visitors of a Japanese garden. General location: The Tunk Lake region of Downeast Maine northeast of Ellsworth in Hancock County."

More Black Mountain Professional Reviews and Guides

"Black Mountain Bald is the eastern summit of Black Mountain. The summit is a large granite dome that offers fine views of the surrounding mountains and coast.

The hike climbs the mountain from the south, up a rocky ridge through spruce forest and across granite bedrock. The open areas abound in blueberries. The trail descends a steep-sided notch, passing Wizard Pond, before the final climb to the summit."
