Shackford Head Trail

Shackford Head Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Shackford Head abounds with seals bobbing in the rapidly changing tides, bald eagles soaring in the salt breezes, and thick carpets of wildflowers flourishing in the moist air. In addition to natural beauty, the rocky location also offers a glimpse into the region’s human history, recent and distant.

With working waterfronts and towering church steeples on the horizon, Shackford Head is surrounded by the very communities that shaped the political philosophy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the most influential president of the twentieth century."

More Shackford Head Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"Shackford Head juts out into Cobscook Bay on the west side of Eastport. The hike passes through mixed forests over crumbling rhyolite bedrock. The cliffs along the shore are as high as 140 feet.

The hike descends to Ship Point where you can stand on rocks just above the water with views of Cobscook Bay and the high cliffs you just hiked across. Even though this is an area of working waterfront, the hike offers surprising solitude and opportunities for spotting wildlife."
