Firewarden's Trail

Firewarden's Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Firewarden’s Trail, sometimes called the Fire Tower Trail, follows an old carriage road and then a jeep road to the summit, from which there are outstanding views into the shimmering lakes and ponds of western Maine and the rippling Presidential peaks into New Hampshire.

A fire tower stands on the summit, but it is boarded during the winter. A few antenna arrays are visible too. Nonetheless, the open summit is a panoramic stage for the skier and snowshoer."

Today was a beautiful bone chilling day, perfect for a nice winter snow shoe. The trail is VERY well marked and a great trail for working up a sweat and being rewarded with excellent views of the White Mountains Range.

This trail turned out to be about as advertised in reports we had seen. It is certainly moderate in nature and about all my 6 and 9 year olds could handle. That being said, they both did exceptionally well with the climb (in spite of blisters from their boots). The hike starts gradually for the 1st quarter to half mile and then the steeper ascents begin. It took us just over 2 hours to get to the top and then about and hour and 15 minutes down. The trail is not well marked, but at the time of year we were there it was quite clear where we should go. The summit provided us terrific views of the entire presidential range, although there was no view of Moose Pond directly below us, as the ascent begins on the Fryeburg side of the mountain (I'm guessing you'd need to be on Bald Peak to see Moose Pond). One other tip - do not try to get to the base area of the trail from Denmark - the Denmark Road is long and almost completely unpaved. The parking area is probably less than a half mile off 302 in Fryeburg - MUCH easier access this way.
