Damariscotta River

Damariscotta River Professional Review and Guide

"Part of a rich and varied ecosystem, the Damariscotta River is a wonderful place to explore by sea kayak. On one trip we observed a pair of bald eagles, a nesting pair of ospreys, several species of gulls, harbor seals, and blue herons, along with huge flotillas of jellyfish and horseshoecrabs. And that was after a mere hour of paddling away from the town landing! The river also supports a thriving aqua culture economy renowned for its oysters.

The river reaches as far inland as Damariscotta Mills, where fish ladders aid the alewife run in the spring and lure a host of birds intent on feeding off of this seasonal run and the rich mudflats of Salt Bay. The tidal flow in and out of Salt Bay can create significant turbulence and even two reversing falls, which serve as play spots for white-water kayakers and canoeists. Most of Salt Bay is exposed mudflats at low tide."
