Holbrook Island Professional Review and Guide
"Sitting just south of Dice Head and Castine Harbor, the Holbrook Island Sanctuary is a unique site that offers island access and mainland foot trails for hours of exploring. The mainland facilities include picnic tables, a pit toilet, a small parking area, and two beaches where kayaks can be launched easily. Ram Island, which sits just east of Holbrook, is managed by the local land trust and is open to limited day use (no fires!).
Launch into Smith Cove from the sanctuary on the Cape Rosier mainland and explore this well-protected area as you meander through the small islands just across from the town of Castine. At low tide you’ll have to swing outside this island group, but at half tide or better you’ll have plenty of water for hours of enjoyable paddling. The channel leading from Dice Head into Castine is well marked, and as you round Nautilus Island, you’ll see the larger Holbrook Island to the south. Castine Harbor offers a glimpse of the many yachts that visit its popular harbor and the Maine Maritime Academy training vessel, State of Maine. At Dice Head you can see both the abandoned lighthouse tower and the newer Coast Guard installation that sits just below it."
