West Peak of Bigelow and the Horns Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This loop hike uses very little of the A.T., but it provides the best of both worlds by allowing the hiker a whirlwind tour of the Bigelow Range, with spectacular views from both the West Peak of Bigelow and South Horn. A side trail leads 0.25 mile to the summit of North Horn, 0.5 mile north of Horns Pond.
The mountain tarn with its two lean-tos is a good stopping place for a picnic lunch (if you begin your hike early in the day). A tarn is defined as a small mountain lake or pond, especially one found in a cirque, a rounded bowl carved out by glacial action. As you stand next to the pond, surrounded by the extremely steep mountain walls rising to the Horns, there is no doubt as to what shaped the topography."
