Moxie Bald, Bald Mountain, and Horseshoe Canyon Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This picturesque hike gets a moderate rating because of the more than 1,500 foot climb of Moxie Bald Mountain (elevation 2,629'). Most of the elevation is gained in 2 miles, but the 360° view makes the ascent worthwhile. There are also two large ponds on the hike—at the onset of the hike and at the recommended campsite. Moxie (Abenaki for “dark water”) Pond and Bald Mountain Pond offer great opportunities for swimming.
Good swimming is also available during the 5-mile walk along the West Branch of the Piscataquis River, which flows by the slate walls of Horseshoe Canyon. Numerous waterfalls and a grove of large white pine trees add to the beauty of the outing. There are several stream fordings on this hike, including a crossing of Baker Stream, the confluence of West Branch of Piscataquis River and Bald Mountain Stream, and East Branch of Piscataquis River."
