Little and Big Niagara Falls Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a fantastic, kid-friendly hike to dramatic waterfalls as the Nesowadnehunk Brook cascades over the rocks. Katahdin is clearly the star of Baxter State Park, but it’s by no means the only peak or excellent hiking route. Head southbound on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) out of Katahdin Stream Campground and you’ll find Little and Big Niagara Falls.

The trailhead for Little and Big Niagara Falls is just across the Park Tote Road from the Katahdin Stream Campground. You start off on a nice hard-packed surface following a gentle rolling grade on a well-defined and well-marked trail. This is a great option for the day after Katahdin, or even two days after, as it’s a fairly relaxing ramble through the dense forest of birch, maple, and conifers."

"A walk to a waterfall is always a nice way to spend a few leisurely hours in the morning or afternoon. This easy outing, which brings you to two falls, is made even more enjoyable by the abundance of birds often seen (or at least heard) going about their daily lives in the mixed hardwood/coniferous forest. Black-capped chickadees and several types of woodpeckers, such as pileated, downy, and hairy, are some of the most common. Although Little and Big Niagara Falls may be small compared to some waterfalls coming down mountainsides, Nesowadnehunk Stream is wide, and its volume of water makes for impressive scenes. The rapid current precludes swimming, but there are many large, flat rocks on which to sunbathe and dangle your feet in the cooling water. This is an easy hike with just a bit of an uphill grade on the return." Read more
