Bald Rock Mountain

Bald Rock Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"A day hike to the summit of a mountain overlooking the upper reaches of Penobscot Bay. The view from the summit is spectacular, and the trail is never crowded. In winter, the Ski Shelter Trail is used for cross-country skiing.

A shelter near the summit is suitable for an overnight stay. Check with park officials before planning an overnight trip. General location: Camden Hills State Park west of Lincolnville Beach and north of Camden in Knox and Waldo Counties, midcoast Maine."

We hiked Bald Rock mtn. for the second time. The first part of the trail was a little uneventful. When you get off the dirt rd. and onto the trail it starts to get better. It’s a slow steady climb with no real views along the way but once you get to the top the view is fantastic! Well worth the effort! A great getting in shape hike, one I would love to do early in the morning on a clear day to see the sunrise. (If that’s possible on the Maine coast)
Since this is the first report on this trail I'll try and be detailed. First of all the Trail Guide was pretty accurate in all respects, no corrections. The trail is a fire road for about 2/3 of the distance, something that I don't really like. I enjoy singletrack much more. But if you have several people or a bunch of kids this aspect could be very appealing. A few hundred yards into the hike there is a trail marker to somewhere I forget, but it is not the one to take. Stay on the road for at least 1.25 miles. The trail to Bald Rock is well marked, and off to the left. No technical difficulties on the trail. A little steep in places, and in wet weather could easily have some slick spots. Lots of roots so good boots are a must. The main attraction of the trail is the view from up top. I wish I could tell you how it was, but the fog was in that day. I imagine this hike would be best if done early in the morning. I'd like to return and start around 4 am and be on top around sunrise.
