Holbrook Island Sanctuary

Holbrook Island Sanctuary Professional Review and Guide

"A series of coastal and inland hiking trails in an undeveloped parcel of Maine’s state park system, on a remote, wild peninsula on East Penobscot Bay. Special attractions: Good place to view different shorebirds. A pamphlet entitled “Checklist of the Birds” is available at the sanctuary. Also, Cape Rosier is home to the famous Nearing Homestead.

Backshore Trail begins to the left of a trailhead sign and takes off through a field. Follow the trail to a fork; go right here. At 100 feet from the fork, you’ll see an old cemetery with stones dating back to 1839. Look across the field in the direction you just came from and see a beautifully-laid stone fence. Huge, ancient ash trees grow along the fence now, but it is not difficult to imagine the land as it was in 1839, when the stone fence was a prominent landmark."
