Grafton Notch Scenic Drive

Grafton Notch Scenic Drive Professional Review and Guide

"A 37-mile scenic drive that traverses rugged Grafton Notch in the Mahoosuc Range near the Maine and New Hampshire border. Beginning in Bethel, Maine, and ending in Errol, New Hampshire, this 37-mile scenic drive explores the deep, glaciated valley of Grafton Notch as it slices across the northern edge of the rugged Mahoosuc Range. The range, an eastern extension of the White Mountains, stretches northeast from Gorham at the northern end of New Hampshire’s Presidential Range to the notch. It offers striking, remote backcountry topped with numerous high peaks, including 4,180-foot Old Speck Mountain, Maine’s third highest. The range crest is a well-defined ridgeline that is closely followed by the Appalachian Trail. Backpackers call the trail segment through the Mahoosuc Range the single roughest section on the entire trail, especially the jumbled boulder maze in Mahoosuc Notch.

Special attractions: Grafton Notch State Park, Step Falls Preserve, Screw Auger Falls Gorge, Mother Walker Falls Gorge, Moose Cave Gorge, Table Rock, Old Speck Mountain and trail, Appalachian Trail, Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge, Umbagog Lake (NH), Umbagog State Park, (NH), camping, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, backpacking, and picnicking."
