Belgrade Lakes Cruise Professional Review and Guide
"The beautiful Belgrade Lakes area is home to many people who work in Augusta, the state capital. In fact, this ride is popular with Augusta area cyclists, who love the enormous shoulders on Maine Highways 8 / 11 / 27. Proximity to an urban area means this one isn’t as bucolic as some lake rides, but the scenery is fine, and the rolling hills make for a good, fast workout. The four lakes on this route are Messalonskee Lake, Great Pond, Long Pond, and Salmon Lake.
Don’t assume the traditional distinction that defines a “pond” as smaller than a “lake.” Great Pond is by far the largest, and Salmon Lake is quite small. Although views of the four lakes on this trip will be infrequent, you’ll never be far from water. Geologists explain that the lakes here in the Augusta area were largely formed from glacial outwash. They tend to be long and thin, in a north-south line, and are blessed with some lovely sandy beaches."
