Frye Mountain

Frye Mountain Professional Review and Guide

"A steep gravel trail leading to a fire tower at the summit of Frye Mountain in the Frye Mountain Game Management Area. The view from the summit of Frye Mountain is excellent, offering scenes of the surrounding farmland, lakes, ponds, and a clear view of Penobscot Bay.

The entire Frye Mountain Game Management Area is open to the public. Hunting and fishing are permitted. General location: About a half-hour drive from Belfast and the coast in midcoast Maine. Frye Mountain is located in Montville, an area of rolling hills and valleys in central Waldo County."

The Georges Highland Path has a well-blazed 5-mile loop through this lovely forest. The guide book is accurate about what is there, but being there was quite powerful. American chestnut, porcupine, and a great blue heron in a woodland stream were natural history highlights. The fire tower is gone. The trail head described is OK, but there's a more formal one, with maps, that's part of the Georges Highland Path. We never did find that.
