Barren-Chairback Range

Barren-Chairback Range Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This rough and rocky mountain range has a lot to offer. You’ll be traversing the five peaks of the Barren–Chairback Range in the One Hundred Mile Wilderness, which stretches from Abol Bridge near Baxter State Park south to Monson. In this section, the A.T. is crossed only by logging roads. Short side trails lead to three mountaintop ponds: Cloud, West Chairback, and East Chairback.

The elevation changes considerably between peaks and gaps along the range, a net gain in elevation of nearly 4,000 feet no matter which direction you hike. The Barren–Chairback Range is for experienced hikers looking for a wilderness trek. Because this hike is a traverse, it will require either a drop-off/pickup or two shuttle vehicles."
