Beehive Trail

Beehive Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A nearly vertical climb up the 520-foot Beehive using iron rungs rewards you with spectacular close-up views of Sand Beach, Great Head, and the ocean beyond. If you hike this trail in summer, plan to start early or late to avoid crowds. You may then find solitude and even encounter wildlife, like the barred owl we saw early one morning on the way down from the Beehive.

The Beehive Trail is not for the faint of heart or weak of limb, nor for anyone afraid of heights or crowds. It features an almost perpendicular climb up iron rungs at its steepest and a Grand Central Station–like atmosphere at its busiest. So crowded is the narrow trail during the peak summer season that, from a distance, people climbing up and down it look like bees swarming around a hive. The Beehive, a 520-foot-high granite dome overlooking Sand Beach, was named by nineteenth-century artist Frederic Church of the Hudson River School for its jagged, glacially carved face."

Excellent climb up, would recommend alternate route down via the Bowl. Or if you are really up for a hike do the 3.6 miles to Rt. 3 via the South Ridge of Champlain Mountain down to Rt 3 via the Beachcroft trail. Stunning views the entire way!

The view from the top of The Beehive is amazing. You can see Sand Beach and everything around it. The Trail up the front of the is a tough climb, but if you take The Bowl trail the hike up to The Beehive will be lots easier, but a longer hike.

For a different kind of hike this trail is great! Unlike any other I've ever done. It's more like a climb than a hike though, and the hike down the other side to the bowl is a nice and welcome change of pace.

2nd only to Precipice trail in Acadia. This short but steep climb to the top was awesome. It will get you prepared for the Precipice trail.

This is a great hike to introduce your kids (8+) and teens to Acadia. After this there were only two kinds of hikes - those with iron rungs and all other uncool trudges. My boys really got into the steep negotiation of the cliff, and the gymnast moves required. The views from the top were a spectacular ocean /coast'mountain mix. Go down via the Bowl for a change of scenery and to let other climbers up the Beehive cliff.

A ton of fun for a cool, short hike. Very strenuous and definately not for pets or probably for very small children (due to the steepness and iron rungs). Suggestion might be to hike this later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. Also it is much nicer to hike down the Bowl side (runs along the ridge and down by the Bowl/lake) so that you don't have to descend the cliff. At a moderate pace, it took about 1.5 hrs. A definate recommend!
