Saxl Park Professional Review and Guide
"Saxl Park, 100 acres of field and shrub on the grounds of the Bangor Mental Health Institute (BMHI), is an oasis of green (brown in fall and early spring) in the midst of one of central Maine’s largest urban areas. Located so close to a commercial center, the park is a favorite haunt of local workers on their lunch break, as well as others who frequent the fields for impromptu picnics.
Grassland birds here include Savannah Sparrow, Bobolink, and Meadowlark. Also common are Brown Thrasher, Tree Swallow, Yellow Warbler, Pine Grosbeak, American Redstart, American Crow, and American Robin. Also seen fairly regularly are Merlin, Peregrine Falcon, American Kestrel and, in fall and spring, Northern Harrier. Look for Red-winged Blackbird in spring and summer, especially around the cattail-filled marshy area. In winter Bohemian Waxwing flock here for berries clinging to bushes. Another occasional winter visitor, the Northern Shrike, sometimes leaves evidence of its presence by impaling small rodents on hawthorn thorns."
