Mount Desert Island Cruise

Mount Desert Island Cruise Professional Review and Guide

"No guide to Maine cycling would be complete without a chapter on Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park—the place that comes to mind when almost anyone talks about biking in Maine. Acadia is the second most visited national park on the East Coast (Great Smoky Mountains Park is first).

That means a lot of tourist traffic. This is a spectacular ride anytime but is most enjoyable in early spring or fall, when crowds are lighter. If summer is the only choice, try to do it early in the morning, before most visitors are on the road. Although the total mileage is relatively short, this ride has been labeled a “cruise” rather than a “ramble.” That categorization is based on both traffic and terrain. Don’t be misled by the fact that this is a coastal ride: It’s very hilly. Readers who are looking for an easy “ramble” will be happier with the Schoodic Peninsula ride or with one of the shorter carriage road loops on Mount Desert Island."
