Isle au Haut

Isle au Haut Professional Review and Guide

"A hike on forest and seaside trails on Isle au Haut in the Gulf of Maine. The southern portion of Isle au Haut is part of Acadia National Park; the northern half of the island is privately owned.

After completing the hike listed here, you might want to tour Isle au Haut's year-round fishing community. General location: The Knox County section of Acadia National Park, 6 miles from Stonington on the mainland."

"Located more than 5 miles south of Deer Isle (south of the Blue Hill Peninsula), Isle au Haut is an 8000-acre island with less than 100 yearround residents. Roughly 60 percent of the 6-mile-long-by-2-mile-wide island is owned and managed by Acadia National Park and, unlike the land located on Mount Desert Island, the Isle au Haut section of the park is far less manicured and much wilder."

"This hike around Western Head on Isle au Haut covers some of the most rugged country on the island. The trails are lightly maintained and often little more than route suggestions, giving the hike a real wilderness feel.

Around Western Head the hike crosses several different bedrock types. On the eastern side of Western Head are cliffs more than 100 feet high that the trail passes over. Beyond the cliffs the hike climbs Duck Harbor Mountains’s long, spruce-covered ridge. Numerous knobs of bedrock jut out of the forest, offering the best views on the island."
