Union Mills Professional Review and Guide

"Take a rugged hike through rural northern Carroll County, slogging over creeks, through steep switchbacks, and pleasant rolling fields. Once past the trailhead, you’ll soon see a sign that reads: “Boulevard Trail.”

The trail, which is dirt and crushed rock, plunges into a grove of pines. Then it runs along a ridge with a slight rise on the left and a steep plunge on the right. At the top of the hill, it opens up, which gives you a nice vista of woods and fields loaded with goldenrod."

The trail guide is somehow vague on finding the trailhead, but once you find it (just walk in between the two ponds heading towards the woods) the trails are easy to follow. There are many variations, most of which end either in a loop or in dead end. We were not able to cross the creek (too much water in and too cold to hike in wet shues), but still had a good workout hiking up and down the surrounding trails.
The driving directions are basically correct. Park between the two ponds though we saw no stables. The trailhead is easy to find. Working your way up the stream and across it is fairly straightforward. Any trail you take will get you there. On the other side you enter the Hashagwa (spelling?) area where the trails are color blazed. You can do loops all over and eventually get to where you started. In short, it's a great hike and may be fantastic in the fall overlooking the streams from high up. The guide book trail directions are so-so but you don't need a compass here.
