Loch Raven Reservoir: Deadman’s Cove Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Find some solitude at Deadman’s Cove, inside the heavily visited Loch Raven Watershed. The trail initially runs along an old fire road through tall grass. It’s very wide, and though in the woods, it’s also well exposed. At first you’ll hear lots of traffic noise, but that will quickly disappear. By 200 feet, as the trail heads down a little hill, the sounds of the woods take over. Tall oaks dominate, rising above thick underbrush.

These woods, like much of the Loch Raven watershed, provide a haven for white-tailed deer, and you’re likely to scatter more than a few. Woodpeckers make their homes here too, and the sound of their tree pounding echoes all along the trail. To the left, an interesting wall of trees fronts the creek bed; their uniformity suggests that they were planted here long ago."

Trail isn't marked well. Got alittle lost. Nice views of the lake, lots of hunting gear left behind. Good scene for fall color hikers.

My wife and I went to this trail tonight. We enjoyed the hike immensley. Within 500 feet of the entrance we were greeted to the site of three deer grazing. I tried to snap a picture and as luck would have it my camera was out of batteries, but back to the trail. The trail is mostly cut with a few rough spots, all in all a great trail form someone just getting started out.

"A quick and easy jaunt will lead you to the edge of the Loch Raven Reservoir, which supplies water for Baltimore City and most of Baltimore County. This trail is not heavily used and is often overgrown with tall grass. But it affords you a nice view and some solitude. Is this a trail off the beaten path or on the beaten path? It’s both, really. It’s definitely a path less traveled, hence the solitude. But it is literally a beaten path as you follow a trail of beaten grass for a good portion. It’s not terribly well maintained, but this trail to the water is a quick fix when you are looking for some peace and quiet with the reward of a nice view. Long pants are recommended due to high grass. You’ll recognize the trailhead by the orange line strung across the path." Read more
